Formula 2 in the 2027 season will introduce slightly modified cars designed to improve racing and make them visually more similar to those currently used in F1. The change of car generation in F2 occurs after just three years, confirming that the previous designs were not entirely successful.

The presentation of the new Formula 2 car took place a week ago during the Italian GP at the Monza circuit. This is a traditional venue for such presentations, as three years earlier the introduction of a new generation was also announced there. Three years ago, the introduction of a new car for the 2024 – 2026 seasons was announced with the possibility of extension, but this option was not taken. Previously, F2 used the same cars for six years. The previous generation was successful in terms of design, and problems related to the coronavirus pandemic facilitated decisions to extend it. The generation of cars introduced in 2024 will end after three seasons. There were some problems with these cars, especially at the beginning of their use. They proved more difficult to set up, with greater reliance on the ground effect, similar to F1, which had both advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, competition in Formula 2 in the ending generation of cars is worse than in the previous one. There were also many random situations related to failures, mainly connected to the powertrain.
Details about the Formula 2 car for 2027
The new Formula 2 cars do not bring any revolution. In fact, it is mainly a refresh affecting the aerodynamic package. The same chassis prepared by the Italian company Dallara will continue to be used. Engines will still be made by Mecachrome, fuel supplied by Aramco, and tires by Pirelli. So nothing changes in the series’ pillars. The car modifications concern the aerodynamic package, with changes to the front and rear wings. The changes aim to improve the visual appearance of the cars and bring their look closer to the contemporary machines used in Formula 1. As usual, there is also a promise of closer wheel-to-wheel racing in F2 thanks to aerodynamic changes. The DRS system for overtaking will continue to be used in F2.
From 2027, the same 3.4-liter turbo V6 engine with 620 HP produced by Mecachrome will be used. After 8000 km, they will be rebuilt. An important novelty is the introduction of a starter in the car; drivers will be able to start the engine themselves, as in recent years there were often problems related to it. I did not see such information in the technical specifications, and earlier it was announced that from 2027 F2 would use 100% synthetic fuels. Currently, fuels with a 55% biofuel blend are used. I do not know if this plan is still in play, but probably yes, because such fuels are already used in F1, and Aramco has experience in this area. The statement mentions advanced synthetic fuels, but I do not know if this means they will be 100% synthetic.

The dimensions of the new F2 car are as follows: length – 528.4 cm, width 190 cm, height 109.7 cm, and wheelbase 313.5 cm. These are identical dimensions to the previous generation.

Summary
The car has already undergone many tests, which began in June of the previous year. Teams will receive one car in December, and the second units in mid-January. Group tests with teams and their drivers are planned later.
Much is said about the high costs in junior series and the need to save. The new cars for F2 are also designed to limit costs. However, I do not think that changing cars after three years will reduce these costs; rather, it will be the opposite. Participation costs for young drivers in F2 or F3 continue to rise, and without their own money, they cannot compete. I do not see a widespread willingness to genuinely reduce costs because karting and junior series are big business; teams earn money from participation fees paid by drivers and their sponsors.
P.S. Of course, I hope that in the coming seasons we will have at least one driver from Poland in Formula 2.
