Last weekend, the drivers of the Indy NXT series competed at the Mid-Ohio track in two races. Below you can see what Tymek Kucharczyk said about this round in the submitted statement. And at the end, you can read my commentary.
Podium and heroic fight with a failure. Tymek Kucharczyk second in the championship after races at Mid-Ohio
Tymek Kucharczyk took second place in the first race of the Indy NXT round at the Mid-Ohio track and for the first time this season took the lead in the overall standings. In the Sunday competition, the Pole had to fight not only with rivals but also with a serious failure.
The weekend at Mid-Ohio went very well for Kucharczyk from the start. The HMD Motorsports representative achieved the second-best time in practice and had a good feel for the car from the first laps. The pace allowed him to realistically think about fighting for top positions in both races. In qualifying, he secured fourth starting positions for both Saturday and Sunday competitions.
In the first race, Kucharczyk had a good start and defended fourth position. Then he began chasing the top three. The key moment came when the Pole, right after the restart, made two spectacular overtaking maneuvers on the outside of corners – one directly after the other. Thanks to them, he advanced to second place, which he held until the finish. The points earned allowed him to take the lead in the Indy NXT overall standings for the first time in history.
On Sunday, the situation was much more difficult. At the start of the second race, Kucharczyk lost fourth position, and a few laps later he also had to acknowledge the advantage of another rival who had better pace. As it later turned out, the Pole struggled with serious technical problems from the beginning. The steering wheel failed, making it difficult for Kucharczyk to change gears. The system also automatically activated the push to pass function, providing a temporary boost of additional power. Uncontrolled consumption of the limited system during the race further complicated the situation.
The malfunction could have led to the premature end of the competition for the then championship leader. Kucharczyk did not give up and despite the problems brought the car to the finish in fifth place. Such effective minimization of losses may be crucial for the fate of the titles.
“From the beginning of the weekend, I had a very good feel for the car. The second-best time in practice showed that we have pace, although after qualifying I knew I had a lot of work ahead in the races. In the first one, I had a good start, and then I made two overtaking maneuvers on the outside. Thanks to that, we took second place and took the lead in the championship for the first time this season. On Sunday, I felt from the start that something was wrong. The steering wheel made gear changes difficult and activated push to pass on its own. At times, I didn’t know if I would even finish the race. In this situation, fifth place was the maximum we could achieve. Of course, it’s a pity to lose the lead in the standings, but the most important thing is that despite such serious problems, we scored points. There is still a lot of racing left until the end of the season, and 17 points is a deficit to make up. I thank my partners, thanks to whom I can compete this year: the insurance comparison site Mubi, ORLEN Motorsport Academy, the Polish Motor Association, the developer and real estate investor Grenova Capital, and the technology company iteo. Polish fans, as always, deserve the biggest applause; they were not lacking here at the track and on Tymek TV. Additional information and my commentary
Tymek Kucharczyk has grown into the most popular young Polish driver. I follow various media, and he is regularly the most talked about. Kucharczyk regularly stands on the podium in Indy NXT and fights for the championship title. His races are broadcast on television, and the Pole has taken care of his marketing; a lot is happening on his social media this year, and he is also preparing interesting videos on YouTube. The key are the sporting results because after 2/3 of the Indy NXT season, I can say that moving to this series was a bullseye. Kucharczyk has earned seven podium places in twelve starts this year, and these are excellent results. In all races, he finished in the TOP9 positions. He currently occupies second place in the overall standings with a minimal deficit to his teammate Enzo Fittipaldi. Just behind the Pole is Nikita Johnson, and the other drivers are far behind. A catastrophe would have to happen in the next races for the Pole to fall out of the TOP3. However, Kucharczyk must aim for the championship title, not just think about defending his position.
For the Pole, competing in the USA is something new; he is getting to know various race tracks, including ovals. Good results mean that he is becoming increasingly popular in the motorsport environment in the USA, which will facilitate a possible promotion to the IndyCar series. Here we return to the topic that surely interests many fans now, namely what Tymek plans for next year? If I were in his place, I would bet on continuing my career in the USA if a promotion to IndyCar is possible. He would be the first Pole there, and in my opinion, he would have a chance for good results. In case of returning to Europe, he would have to race in Formula 2, which is a very expensive series, and budget problems occur every year. Any other series would be a regression compared to Indy NXT. Kucharczyk is not associated with any F1 team academy, and that is essential nowadays if you want to get to F1 someday. Therefore, in my opinion, it is better for him to focus on a career in the USA because he has a chance to settle there longer and achieve real success. One can imagine how his popularity would skyrocket after moving to the IndyCar series, which would certainly be broadcast by one of our TV stations.
