The record, which had belonged to the Australian GP at the Adelaide circuit for over 30 years, was broken. In 2026, over 550,000 people attended the Silverstone circuit over the weekend.

Formula 1 is currently enjoying record popularity, with almost all races selling out completely. Many circuits have expanded their stands in recent years, ticket prices have risen significantly, but attendance remains at an excellent level. This year, we have already seen overall attendance records for the Austrian GP, Canadian GP, and Australian GP at the Melbourne circuit. Tickets sold out for events in China, Miami, and Monaco. Japan had its best attendance in 20 years, and Barcelona’s attendance was only slightly lower than last year’s result.
2026 British GP with the highest attendance in F1 history
Before the weekend, there were reports that record attendance was expected because, thanks to the expansion of the stands, significantly more tickets were sold than the previous year. I remind you that in 2025, the weekend attendance at the British GP was 500,000 people, the best result in the 21st century. In 2026, this was significantly improved. According to the organizers (Source), in 2026 at Silverstone there were 72,000 fans on Thursday, 150,000 on Friday, 167,000 on Saturday, and 175,000 on Sunday. The total weekend attendance was therefore 564,000 fans. Compared to last year, attendance was better every day.
In 2026, the stands at Silverstone were expanded, with the biggest changes affecting the Lando Norris stand, which was significantly enlarged to 16,000 seats. In recent years, there have been many investments at this circuit; the track is almost entirely surrounded by stands, a hotel was built on the start/finish straight, new VIP rooms were created in the Paddock Club, and a housing estate of cottages was developed and sold. Silverstone is a circuit with very diverse spectator areas, from the cheapest on the grass, through classic stands, to the most expensive tickets in the hotel or Paddock Club. Attendance in 2026 could have been even higher, as a very small number of tickets remained on sale during the weekend.
Fan attendance at Silverstone has always been high. Whether local drivers played a big role in the championships or not, many fans attended the British GP. Historically, this is a circuit where attendance was often the highest in the season. In 2026, the record interest may have been influenced by the sprint format, which always causes an increase in ticket sales for the entire weekend. Also, remember that this year there are five British drivers in the field (plus Albon, who has citizenship), including three competing for podium places and victories. The British have not had so many top drivers in the field for a long time. British fans know F1 well, often appearing at the circuit from Thursday, and some even earlier. There are large camping fields around the circuit because the track is located somewhat on the outskirts. This is a way to have cheaper accommodation (ticket, parking, and food costs at the circuit are very high) and the possibility to stay at the circuit all day.

I have prepared a summary of attendance at the British GP from 2014 – 2026. Not all fields in the table are complete because the organizers did not always provide numbers broken down by individual days. Attendance at Silverstone has always been high, but the data shows several clear jumps related to the expansion of the stands and increased ticket sales for the early days of the weekend, not just Sunday.

Remember, weekend attendance is the total number of fans who appeared at the circuit from Thursday to Sunday. A person with a four-day ticket is counted four times in this attendance. The unique number of viewers during the weekend is the result on Sunday alone.

Previous record for weekend attendance in Formula 1
The previous record for weekend attendance in F1 history was the 1995 Australian GP on the street circuit in Adelaide. Then, on Thursday, there were 74,000 fans at the circuit, 102,000 on Friday, 139,000 on Saturday, and 210,000 on Sunday. That race generated huge interest due to the farewell to the Adelaide circuit. Organizers had to add more stands because ticket demand far exceeded plans. The entire weekend was filled with attractions, and on Sunday after the race, there was a concert by Bon Jovi. The Adelaide event was the first in F1 history to so effectively combine on- and off-track attractions, hence the large attendance throughout the weekend. Concerts had been organized there in previous years as well.
Official attendance record at an F1 race
According to officially reported data, the largest single-day attendance at an F1 race was 250,000 fans at the Indianapolis circuit during the 2000 US GP. This was F1’s debut on the road course version of this circuit, specially prepared for this purpose. Fans sat in the huge stands around the oval track. In subsequent years during F1 visits to this circuit, attendance was significantly lower, with many stands completely empty.
175,000 fans at the Silverstone race in 2025 is the best single-day result in Formula 1 since the mentioned Indianapolis race 26 years ago. In the current F1 calendar, Silverstone has the largest stands, so with a full ticket sale, this attendance result is impossible to beat by anyone. We have to wait until the stands are expanded again or another circuit does so.
In earlier years, higher attendance results for the entire weekend were probably recorded at selected circuits. The main candidate is the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The German GP on the 22-kilometer track could be watched by over 300,000 fans in one day. Besides ticket holders, many fans followed the drivers’ battles from nearby hills. These numbers cannot be verified because those fans were not counted at the time and often were not ticketed. The difference is that in the past, stands could actually be full during the Sunday race, but fans did not come in such numbers on earlier days to watch practice or qualifying.
P.S. In the current calendar, there are two circuits that could potentially have weekend attendance exceeding 0.5 million fans in the future. The Mexican GP slightly exceeds 0.4 million, but they do not organize anything big on Thursdays and count people from three days, not four. This is something they could improve. The Australian GP at the Melbourne circuit has the ambition to exceed 0.5 million fans. This year, there were as many as 483,934 fans over four days. Albert Park is undergoing modernization, with expanded facilities, and in 2028 it will be possible to exceed 0.5 million fans, but they will fall short of the Silverstone record.
