George Russell won the qualifying for the 2026 Austrian GP after the confusion at the end caused by Max Verstappen’s crash. The Briton slowed down enough at the yellow flag and beat both Ferrari drivers, who for a moment hoped for the front row. Welcome to the qualifying analysis before the 2026 Austrian GP.

Qualifying was held in air temperatures exceeding 30 degrees and track temperatures over 50 degrees Celsius. Q1 and Q2 went very smoothly, but at the end of Q3 Max Verstappen crashed, which led to a yellow flag and affected the final results. Overall, the drivers drove quite little because they were saving tires for the race, where different strategies are possible.

Confusion with yellow flags at the end of Q3
There is a lot of controversy after qualifying, so it’s time for clarification. Verstappen crashed in the penultimate corner number 9 at the end of Q3. After him, the Mercedes drivers were doing their fast laps, first Antonelli, and shortly after Russell. When Verstappen crashed, a single yellow flag appeared at that spot, which after 22 seconds changed to a double yellow. During a single yellow flag, it is enough to lift off the throttle and this almost always satisfies the stewards. Both Mercedes drivers passed during the single flag, the double flag appeared shortly after their laps. Antonelli completely lifted off because he thought there was a double flag, he had that on his display and his engineer told him so, but that was a mistake. Russell saw a flashing single yellow flag on the panel (Antonelli had the same), slowed down there, and when he entered the next mini sector where there was a green flag again, he accelerated again. It can be seen in the telemetry that Russell lifted off the throttle about 100 meters earlier than on the previous lap, so he did what should be done.
Verstappen’s crash was serious, it was a mistake to show a single yellow flag, it should have been a double immediately. Russell’s experience showed, he knew how to behave in such a situation. Antonelli drove very cautiously, so he lost out. There should not have been a red flag in this situation because it was already after the session. A double yellow would have been sufficient.
Fight for Pole Position and race forecast for the front runners
The competition at the end of Q3 was interesting because all the front runners improved and the fight was at a very high level. George Russell took Pole Position despite lifting off in the third sector. It’s hard to calculate exactly how much he lost (because by lifting off he charged the battery and gained after corner number 10), I estimate about 0.1 seconds. That means his optimal time would be around 1:06.0. Kimi Antonelli on his interrupted final lap was 0.099 seconds slower than Russell after two sectors, so he was slower and that is a surprise. Earlier in qualifying Antonelli seemed to be the favorite, but Russell showed great form on the last lap. Antonelli was classified in fourth position, which is a defeat for him. Mercedes drivers were the fastest in the third sector throughout qualifying. On the final laps, they also led in the first sector but lost slightly in the second.
Ferrari drivers surprised at the end of Q3. We have a similar situation as in Barcelona, i.e. Ferrari decided to show less potential in practice, this will need to be watched in the coming weekends. Telemetry shows better speeds on straights. They still lose a lot to Mercedes, but not as much as in practice. Leclerc and Hamilton did their optimal laps at the end of Q3. Leclerc was slightly faster, which will surely boost him. Ferrari’s loss is due to a weaker engine, telemetry shows they cannot maintain such speeds on straights over the whole lap as Mercedes, only matching them on selected parts. If the situation from Barcelona repeats and Ferrari manages tires better over the race distance, there is a chance to win. If tire degradation is comparable, Mercedes drivers will have a big advantage in direct battles.
Max Verstappen showed great pace in the first two sectors during qualifying but lost a lot in the third. At the end of Q3 he broke the second sector record and at that moment had a really great time, but crashed in corner number 9, so he was classified fifth. In my opinion, the Dutchman took a risk, knowing he lost time there before and decided to go faster, but lacked grip and ended up in the barrier. Without that crash, he should have been ahead of the Ferrari drivers. It is uncertain if he will start from that position because the car was damaged, and Red Bull introduced many upgrades this weekend. If they don’t have spare parts of the same specification, he will have to start from the pit lane. Verstappen has the most tires saved for the race, so if he starts fifth, he can choose strategy and fight rivals. Update 23:00. Red Bull stated that the cause of the crash was earlier damage to the rear wing which caused improper closing of the upper flap during braking.
McLaren drivers did almost optimal laps in Q3, but that only gave them sixth and seventh place. We have the opposite of Ferrari here, i.e. McLaren shows too much in practice but falls behind in qualifying. The time losses are not big, only 0.1 seconds to third Hamilton, so there is a chance to gain something in the race, especially since they have a better engine.
Looking at pure potential, Mercedes has a clear advantage, over 0.3 seconds ahead of rivals. If the race is clean, without neutralizations and with expected tire degradation, they should secure a one-two finish. Rivals should take risks with strategies, especially Ferrari drivers and Verstappen, because they have little to lose and can put pressure on Mercedes. We know that failures do not spare them this year when they have to push 100%, so rivals should apply pressure. The race should be run with two pit stops, but tire choices may vary. The front runners did not run on hard tires, so their pace on them is unknown.

Overview of other selected drivers and teams
The Racing Bulls team and its drivers deserve great praise, as they all advanced to Q3. Of course, they only fought for ninth place, but there is a clear improvement in this team’s form in recent weeks. There is a chance for double points in the race. Alpine, Audi, and Haas drivers were eliminated in Q2. Gasly missed Q3 by 0.04 seconds, so it was very close. Overall, these four teams are relatively close, so different scenarios are possible in the race.
Williams, Cadillac, and Aston Martin drivers were eliminated in Q1, who lined up as teams. We see a crisis at Williams, the team has not been developing recently, saving resources for bigger changes, but it is unknown when they will appear. Aston Martin is in a similar situation, falling further behind at the back of the grid (here the B version of the car is announced for the end of July). Cadillac had significant upgrades this weekend, but it is not enough to think about Q2.
Preview of the 2026 Austrian GP race
The Red Bull Ring track has a very simple layout on paper. It mainly consists of straights and a few corners. However, it is a demanding circuit where every smallest mistake has consequences because lap time differences are small. The track is located in the mountains, with significant elevation changes. The location of the track at over 600 m above sea level has a big impact on car performance because air density is lower at this altitude. This means the car generates less drag, so it can go faster on straights. It is also a challenge for engine and brake cooling because all openings must be opened more to allow enough air. This also affects engine power. At this altitude, the turbocharger is more stressed. You can find a full characteristic of the Red Bull Ring track along with a blog schematic at this link.
The track has several straights ending with heavy braking, so overtaking is among the easiest in the season except when groups of drivers form on similar strategies. Race starts at the Red Bull Ring are very interesting because drivers have to climb uphill to the first corner, which is tight, and the fight continues on the next two straights. Engine regulations from 2026 should significantly increase the number of overtaking maneuvers because the extra engine power will make a bigger difference than the DRS system.
Pirelli traditionally brought C3, C4, and C5 tires to Austria. The track surface has not been replaced for a long time, it has become rougher, which on one hand provides good grip, and on the other increases tire wear. The challenge is to keep tires at optimal temperature because due to short straights and demanding corners, it is very easy to overheat them. Rear tires will wear out first. Tire degradation on this track occurs due to overheating, so this year it will be higher than usual. Everything indicates that teams will opt for a two-stop strategy, optimal should look like this: medium – hard – hard. One-stop should be possible but slower. In case of neutralization, it is worth changing tires a third time. Overtaking is easy on this track, and new tires give an advantage, so it is better to opt for more pit stops when expectations for different strategies are similar.
Throughout the weekend, air temperature remains above 30 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the track is expected to heat up to over 50 degrees Celsius – very similar conditions were in last year’s race. There is no chance of rain. During three of the last five F1 races at this venue (seasons 2021 – 2025), full neutralization occurred. Crashes and cars stuck in gravel happen at the Red Bull Ring, and there are also failures, and when a car stops next to the track, the race director decides on virtual neutralizations.
Summary
George Russell won qualifying by driving a great lap and behaving in a critical moment as a driver fighting for the highest goals should. If it is enough to slightly slow down, then that should be done, no more. We have had many such situations with yellow flags in F1, there are always controversies from those who lose out. Antonelli lacked experience here, but I am sure he will be very determined on Sunday because of this. Mercedes is the favorite for a one-two finish, but different tire strategies are possible, which will mix up the field. With such small time differences and possible different strategies, everything will be decided by possible neutralizations. I expect a direct duel between Russell and Antonelli here, this track favors such situations.
