The 2026 Barcelona-Catalonia GP was held in real heat, with track temperatures consistently above 50 degrees Celsius. These were very demanding conditions for drivers, cars, and tires. The increased number of failures was likely caused by the tough conditions. During the race, there were two periods of virtual safety car due to the need to remove broken cars.

Franco Colapinto received a 10-second penalty and 1 penalty point after the race for insufficient slowing down when passing through the yellow flag zone. The Argentine was in eighth place at the finish line but dropped to tenth due to the penalty.

After the race, Kimi Antonelli was given a 5-second penalty for exceeding track limits, which did not affect the results. The stewards gave him the penalty too late, as he qualified for it before his last pit stop. They only assigned it after the race.

Race marked by tire degradation, strategy, and many failures

For the first time this year, we had a race where tire management was more important than outright pace. Drivers were relatively slow; the difference between qualifying and race pace was 7-9 seconds, whereas this year it was usually much less. This is precisely due to the tires, which degraded quickly, as lap times steadily dropped. For this reason, all drivers opted for at least two pit stops, with some making three. This strongly influenced the race, with various strategies and ideas. The reason was Pirelli’s decision to bring tires one step softer than last year. With last year’s selection, we would probably have seen a typical one-stop race in 2026.

Seven drivers did not finish the race, and one finished but was 11 laps down. Albon initially retired but returned to the race after repairs. The causes of failures varied, but many indicate that the difficult weather conditions contributed to at least some of them.

Lewis Hamilton’s first victory with Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton won in very good style. Of course, the virtual safety car at a convenient moment helped him, but considering the pace of the front runners at the end of the race, in my opinion, he had a real chance to win without that aid. I don’t know who came up with the three-stop strategy, but it was a bullseye. Hamilton was committed to it from the start and could push for most of the distance, driving at a very competitive pace. When at the start, despite tire advantage, he did not overtake Russell and stayed second, it seemed he lost his main chance. He later showed great pace after each tire change, pushed from the beginning, and made up time. The VSC came at the perfect moment for him, allowing a quick pit stop, and in the final stages, he had fresher tires than his rivals, whom he distanced significantly. Analyzing lap times closely, I believe without the VSC he still had a real chance to win, as fresh tires would have given him even a second advantage per lap at the end, since the pace of Mercedes and Norris was weak then.

This is a great success for Hamilton and may change the team dynamics in his favor, as Leclerc has been struggling recently. Another important point is that Ferrari introduced significant aerodynamic upgrades in Barcelona, and they worked. The car is fast and gentler on tires than the competition, which bodes well for upcoming weekends. If rumors are confirmed that Ferrari will soon (Austria) introduce an improved engine, the Maranello team will return to real contention.

Mercedes with several problems

Mercedes did not win an F1 race for the first time this year and will leave Barcelona in a bad mood, as with good race management they should have won. This race will certainly give them much to think about, as several bad things happened from their perspective, which I will discuss in points.

– It seems that this year Mercedes’ problem is excessive tire degradation in races held in heat. In previous races this year, tires played no role, wear was low, and drivers could push continuously at optimal pace. In Barcelona, tire degradation was very high, and both Mercedes drivers had big problems with it. They could not show their full potential. Every upcoming race where tire wear matters and it is hot will seriously threaten Mercedes.

– The strategy was very poor. From the start, it was known Hamilton was going for three pit stops. Mercedes drivers aimed for two, but Russell was called for his first stop one lap after Hamilton. At that moment, Mercedes should have changed his strategy to three stops and called him to the pits always one lap after Hamilton. This way, Russell would have maintained track position and should have won, as Hamilton would never have had fresher tires. Tire degradation was high, and by making the first stop so early, they extended the next two stints too much, resulting in weak pace at the end.

– Russell had competitive pace on intermediate tires (which he changed too early), but was worse on hards. Antonelli was the opposite. The Italian, due to slower pace at the start and a slightly later first stop, was about 9 seconds behind Russell at the start of lap 15. On hard tires, he was clearly better and by lap 31 reduced the gap to under a second. He stayed just behind Russell until the end, effectively attacking him in the final stages. It was said this weekend that Mercedes drivers use different setups. I suspect Russell’s car was set more for qualifying, Antonelli’s more for the race. For Russell, this is a last warning, as Antonelli can compete with him everywhere.

– Antonelli did not finish due to a mysterious failure, likely related to the power unit. Mercedes has had many failures this year, and despite improvements, new ones keep appearing. This is a big problem for them.

The only plus for Mercedes after this race is confirmation that they improved starts; both drivers did not lose positions on the long run to the first corner. The new engine software introduced a few weeks ago helped as expected.

Discussion of other significant results

Red Bull was racing in no man’s land this race. Max Verstappen, like Hamilton, went for three stops but did not have as good a pace. He lost 40 seconds at the finish, which is a huge difference. Isack Hadjar lost eight positions at the start (another bad start for one of the team’s drivers this year). He quickly dealt with midfield drivers but lost so much time that he had nothing to fight for – he was last among the front runners. The Red Bull car clearly lags behind rivals, and Barcelona was a perfect example. In two weeks, it may be different, as rumors say they are preparing an important aerodynamic upgrade package combined with car weight reduction (only their car is overweight among the front runners).

Lando Norris drove a very competitive race, battling two Mercedes drivers. McLaren lacked strategic risk. If they had gone for three stops like Hamilton, they could have beaten the Mercedes. Piastri’s form was disappointing, losing 35 seconds to his teammate. McLaren has potential but must learn to fully exploit it. Further aerodynamic upgrades are needed.

Alpine drivers drove very well, gaining several positions and scoring solid points. Pierre Gasly additionally benefited from the VSC, as he made his pit stop then, allowing him to beat Racing Bulls drivers. There was also some team driving, with Colapinto letting Gasly through, which was a very good decision from the race perspective.

Racing Bulls drivers used two different strategies that yielded similar results. Lawson had a very short first stint, Lindblad a long one. Neither was optimal; they lost to Alpine drivers over the race distance but later overtook penalized Colapinto in the standings.

Charles Leclerc retired near the end due to a power steering failure. At that moment, he was behind Verstappen, losing time to him. Leclerc had a good start and early race, but his pace on hard tires was worse. It was a very unsuccessful weekend for him.

Fernando Alonso retired due to battery failure (he received a completely new one on Sunday). Lance Stroll retired due to gearbox failure. Oliver Bearman had a failure, but details were not disclosed. Valtteri Bottas retired before a serious failure, as a precaution.

Nico Hulkenberg had enormous bad luck, a situation not seen before in F1, as far as I recall. Lawson, driving ahead, went off track, throwing some gravel into the air, and a stone hit the button in front of the cockpit used by marshals to shut down the car in emergencies. The Audi car stalled, and the German retired, losing his chance for first points this year.

Alex Albon retired because the camera above his helmet broke. An unusual situation in Formula 1; interesting how it happened? Albon returned to the track after repairs with some setup changes and treated the rest of the race as testing.

Current overall standings after the Barcelona-Catalonia GP can be found here. The gaps among the top drivers have narrowed.

Summary

It was another interesting race this year. This time, tires and various strategies played the main role, giving us an exciting battle at the front. Hamilton’s win was received very positively; we will see in the coming weeks whether it was a one-off or if Ferrari will regularly fight for wins.

Final engine performance measurement results are expected in the coming days, and ADUO will be approved. In two weeks at the Austrian GP, we expect important upgrades on several cars, which will affect the balance of power to some extent.
