Penalty points are awarded to F1 drivers alongside other penalties. Received points are valid for 12 months. If a driver accumulates 12 points on their account, they are automatically suspended for the next Formula 1 race. Below is a summary of penalty points in F1. Below the table, I provide other information about penalty points, including when they were introduced, whether anyone has been suspended, and what the penalty schedule is.

Penalty points in Formula 1

The table will be updated regularly. It contains only the names of drivers currently competing in Formula 1. In the third column, I have included the expiration dates of the points along with their number. The table has been prepared to be readable on smartphones as well.

Points in the table are updated a few days after each race (information is at the end of the table). I then add new points and remove those that expire before the next race weekend.

Rules regarding penalty points in Formula 1

Penalty points were introduced in Formula 1 in 2014. They are awarded to drivers alongside other penalties. The origin of these points can be found in 2012, when Romain Grosjean was suspended for the next race after causing a major crash at the start of the Belgian GP. F1 authorities concluded that a way was needed to temper drivers who regularly break the rules and introduce such a deterrent. Since the introduction of penalty points, no F1 driver had accumulated 12, so no one had been excluded. Two drivers came closest to reaching the limit: Daniil Kvyat during 2017 and Pierre Gasly at the turn of the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The mentioned drivers had 10 penalty points on their account. Update 01.09.2024 Kevin Magnussen reached 12 penalty points and as a penalty did not start in the Azerbaijan GP race. He is the first driver since the introduction of penalty points to be punished in this way.

Penalty points collected in lower racing series do not carry over to F1. If a driver moves from F2 to F1, their points start from zero. The exception is a situation where an F2 driver has accumulated 12 points after the last race of the season. If their next race is to be a Formula 1 Grand Prix, they will not be able to start in it.

Penalty points in F1 are awarded by stewards for various offenses. Stewards can award a maximum of three points for a single offense. Considering previous years, such situations are rare, as usually one or two points are awarded. A driver can receive several penalties in one weekend, and thus accumulate many points. Points can be awarded for, among other things, causing a collision, ignoring yellow flags, or driving too fast behind the safety car. The problem is the rather loose penalty schedule and the stewards’ approach. There is no guarantee that for similar offenses, different drivers during different race weekends will receive the same number of penalty points. A tendency can also be observed that drivers who have few penalty points are treated more harshly. Those who have many usually receive basic penalties, without additional points. For this reason, no one had reached the limit and been suspended until now.

In past years, there has been much controversy with penalty points in F1. The general idea of this system is good, but the penalty schedule itself should be systematized. Points should be imposed automatically, but only for serious offenses. Giving drivers points for lining up in the wrong starting position or exceeding track limits in qualifying is too meticulous. For serious collisions resulting in the elimination of an opponent, there are often no points, so this system needs improvement.

Since the introduction of penalty points, the guidelines on what basis stewards award them have changed several times. Before the 2026 season, a significant change in approach was introduced, which will result in far fewer penalty points. Stewards are to award them for dangerous or intentional driver behavior. Ordinary racing collisions, in which one of the drivers is fully at fault, will most often not mean adding penalty points in addition to a time penalty. Three years earlier, penalty points stopped being awarded for minor sporting offenses such as exceeding track limits or speed in the pit lane. All this means that from 2026, reaching the penalty point limit will be very difficult, and this issue will take a back seat.
