One of the best benchmarks for analyzing an F1 driver’s form is to see how they perform against their teammate. This comparison is not fully objective in all situations due to many random factors such as breakdowns, collisions, or penalties. However, in F1, where each team has a different car, internal rivalry allows for the most accurate assessment of a driver’s form. Drivers have the same equipment at their disposal, so we can see which of them makes better use of it.
I only take into account driver rivalries in qualifying and races. I completely ignore practice sessions, which follow their own rules and where the goal is never to beat a teammate, but to properly prepare for qualifying and the race. A similar comparison regarding sprints in 2026 will be conducted separately; a link will appear here after the first sprint.
Intra-team qualifying head-to-heads in the 2026 season
In the case of qualifying head-to-heads, I take several conditions into account for the purpose of developing the table below. Both drivers must participate in qualifying. If one of them does not take to the track at all for some reason, I skip such a qualifying session. I do not take into account any grid penalties. I only include disqualification penalties from qualifying results, e.g., due to an illegal car. If both drivers participated in qualifying, there must be a winner in the given team even if one of the drivers, due to technical problems or a crash, was unable to complete any timed lap without issues. If a team’s driver lineup changes during the season, the internal head-to-head starts from scratch. The driver of a given team who achieves a better position during qualifying wins the internal head-to-head and gains a point.

Intra-team race head-to-heads in the 2026 season
In the case of race head-to-heads, I award points based on the final results after all penalties have been applied. If one of the drivers is excluded from the race results or does not start at all, I do not award a point to their teammate in such a case. If both drivers of a given team are not classified in the race (completed less than 90% of the distance), neither of them gets a point, regardless of the reason and the moment of not finishing the race. If both drivers were classified (completed more than 90% of the distance) but did not reach the finish line, the winner of the head-to-head is the one who completed more laps. If one of the drivers did not finish the race and the other reached the finish line, they get one point regardless of the reason for their partner’s withdrawal. If a team’s driver lineup changes during the season, the internal head-to-head starts from scratch.

I award one point for winning an internal head-to-head in a qualifying session or a race. The maximum number of points a driver can earn equals the number of race weekends in 2026.
Sprint weekends in 2026
In the 2026 season, six F1 sprints will take place during the Chinese GP, Miami GP, Canadian GP, British GP, Dutch GP, and Singapore GP. Separate shortened qualifying sessions will be held before each of them.
